Cannot connect to Microsoft SQL Server

Solution

Applies to:

If you get the following error while trying to connect to a SQL Server database on a network:

"SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]"

and you're using Windows 10 version 1803 or later, the error might be due to the SMB 1 protocol on your network server. Windows 10 version 1803 and later deactivate SMB 1 for several reasons. As a result, you have to update the server to use SMB 2 or later.
